David
Kimani is a five time NCAA Champion, currently competing for the
University of Alabama. Kimani won the Drake Relays crowd with his
gutsy 3:52.6 split in Friday afternoon ('Bama was 3rd), he solidified
his standing with a 3:58-something split in Saturday's Distance
Medley Relay, which the Crimson Tide won in 9:39.89. We talked to
an elated Kimani after the DMR on Saturday, as he was congratulated
by teammates, coaches, opponents, and well-wishers.
MensRacing.com:
Congratulations on your outstanding weekend, David. How do you feel
about today's race?
David
Kimani : I was just so happy because not all of us are
milers.
MR.com:
Can you talk about what was going through your mind when you got
the stick?
DK:
I told my teammates that I would try to do my best to bring it home.
Before the race I knew Arkansas was going to be the team to beat
so when they dropped out, I knew I had to bring it home.
MR.com:
Bryan Berryhill gave you a little bit of a scare towards the end,
though.
DK:
After about 800 meters I knew I had to push it hard on the third
lap, but I was composed. I knew those guys were coming. I wasn't
trying to pull away, I was just trying to stay ahead.
MR.com:
Well, you were able to pull it off. What are your plans for the
rest of the outdoor season?
DK:
[Distracted] I think we placed where we were supposed
to be. It feels so good.
MR.com:
Well, congratulations on a great weekend, David. Good luck on the
rest of your season.
DK:
Yes, thank you.
