Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa made a move around mile 24...
...and steadily pulled away from Timothy Cherigat and Meb Keflezighi.
Ramaala had a comfortable lead with about one mile to go (pictured above)...
...and went on to win his first major marathon title in 2:09:27.
Timothy Cherigat of Kenya ran in second place with one mile to go...
...but he was run down by Keflezighi. Cherigat finished third in 2:10:00.
Keflezighi ran a strong final mile to take second in 2:09:53.
Just 70 days earlier, Keflezighi pulled off the performance of his life...
...and earned a silver medal in the marathon at the Athens...
...Olympic Games. Keflezighi proved here that his medal was no fluke.
Patrick Tambwe of France (but a citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo)...
...finished fourth in 2:10:11.
Benson Cherono of Kenya finished fifth in 2:11:23.
The weather at the finish was reported as being in the low 60s...
...slightly warmer than ideal.
Christopher Cheboiboch of Kenya finished sixth...
...in 2:12:34. Cheboiboch was the runner up in the...
...2002 New York City Marathon and finished...
...third in 2003.
John Kagwe, the 1997 and 1998 champion here, finished seventh in 2:12:35.
