At the start, the temperature was approximately 36 degrees and 29 with the wind chill.
Alan Culpepper, considered by many to be the race favorite, warms up.
Right from the gun Peter Clusener (aka "Crazy Pete") jumped out to a lead.
Teddy Mitchell was the only runner who tried to go after Clusener.
Mitchell moved into the lead in the second mile.
The runners in the pack didn't seem too worried about the two early frontrunners.
All of the favorites hung back in the pack early on.
Teddy Mitchell led through five miles in 25:29 with Brian Sell in second (25:44).
Jason Lehmkuhle leads the pack.
The pack caught Clusener right around the five-mile mark.
Brian Sell was the only runner from the pack who decided to go after Teddy Mitchell.
Sell caught and passed Mitchell relatively quickly and built a tremendous...
...lead on the field. Sell eventually stretched his lead over the field out to more than a minute.
Alan Culpepper leads the chase pack.
Scott Larson (with David Morris and Ryan Shay) runs in the pack.
Kevin Collins and Josh Cox pull a still relatively large pack along.
Brian Sell led by about 41 seconds at the halfway point and 59 seconds at 15 miles.
After a while, the pack, mostly led by Culpepper and Meb Keflezighi, began to pick up the pace and go after Sell.
Josh Cox begins to drop back from the chase pack.
About halfway through the second of three downtown loops, it's (L-R) Dan Browne, Keflezighi, Trent Briney, Culpepper, and Larson (with Eddy Hellebuyck obscured and Brian Sell still out front).
