Jason Lehmkuhle (left) and Keith Dowling led the chase pack...
...as they approached the two-mile mark.
Peter Clusener ran in second place, behind Teddy Mitchell and ahead of the pack.
Clusener, 26, began his collegiate career at SUNY-Stony Brook before transferring to...
...Humboldt State. With a 2:19:31 PR, no one in the pack seemed particularly worried about...
...Clusener and Mitchell running out front.
Clusener didn't seem too worried, either, as he had a smile on his face much of the way.
The pack gradually made up ground on Clusener...
...and caught him in the fourth mile.
By that point, Teddy Mitchell had a big lead, but he was still within sight of the pack.
The early solo running eventually took its toll on...
...on Mitchell and Clusener as neither finished the race.
Mitchell came back the next day to finish second in the Mercedes Half-Marathon.
Brian Sell pulled away from the pack and set out to reel in Mitchell.
Sell caught Mitchell not long before the seven-mile mark.
Despite his modest 2:20:01 PR, several experts picked Sell as a likely candidate to make the Olympic team.
Sell later said that he knew he wasn't going to make the team by sticking with the leaders and outrunning them at the end.
Sell opted for a bolder tactic instead - running away from the field. Sell caught and passed Mitchell relatively quickly...
...and from then on, it was a solo run for Sell.
Sell had impressive credentials at the half-marathon and 20K, but had only run one marathon.
