By the eighth mile, the pack (trailing Brian Sell and Teddy Mitchell)...
...had shrunk a little, but still contained all of the top contenders.
Jason Lehmkuhle continued to set the pace, with Alan Culpepper right behind.
L-R: #20 Josh Cox, #33 Peter Gilmore, #78 Matt Sandercock, and Fred Kieser (in white shirt).
#83 Scott Strand and #47 Jim Jurcevich.
Strand, who lives in Birmingham, helped design the course.
Early leader Peter Clusener and Hansons-Brooks' Trent Briney run at the back of the pack.
L-R: Pete Julian, Weldon Johnson, and Chris Lundstrom
Lundstrom finished third at the 2001 USA Marathon Championships in New York City.
Strand came in with a PR of 2:16:52, set on this course one year earlier.
Fred Kieser, 32, came in with a marathon best of 2:18:27 from 1999.
Clint Verran and Jim Jurcevich
Due to the wind and cold, not many athletes ran PRs in this race.
Weldon Johnson dropped out of the race before the halfway point.
L-R on outside: Greg Jimmerson, David Morris, and Jurcevich.
L-R: Kieser, Kevin Collins, and Peter Gilmore.
Brian Clas set his PR (2:17:15) on this course one year earlier.
Morris' PR of 2:09:32, set in 1999, was once the American record.
Approaching the nine-mile mark, Brian Sell was all on his own out front.
The first 9+ miles of the course were mainly a straight shot, and then the athletes ran the downtown loop three times before finishing in downtown Birmingham.
