Sean Jefferson won the first mile prelim. in 4:02.54, with Scott McGowan (mostly obscured, 2nd, 4:02.88)...
...Chris Mulvaney (#373, 3rd, 4:02.92), David Freeman (not pictured) and Eric Garner (in purple, 5th, 4:03.22) also advancing.
Taylor Milne finished seventh in 4:07.03 and did not advance to Saturday's final.

Thompson, better known for his accomplishments at the longer distances, continues to lead.
Schmidt runs at the back of the pack.
Robison takes over the lead. He went on to win the second prelim. in 4:03.35.
UCLA's Ben Aragon leads Michigan State's Steve Sherer.
Aragon finished sixth in 4:05.42 and was the fastest non-qualifier.
Thompson faded and finished seventh in 4:08.78.
Robison won, with Woolhouse (in orange) second in 4:03.65.
Navy's Schmidt (3rd, 4:04.09) and Michigan's State's Sherer (4th, 4:04.11) and Desilets (5th, 4:04.40) also advanced.
Oregon's Ryan Andrus and Georgetown's Rod Koborsi get ready for the 5,000m final.
