Navy Senior Erik Schmidt gets ready for the mile final.
Washington senior Eric Garner.
L-R: Steve Sherer, David Freeman, Scott McGowan, and Sean Jefferson.
There was no strong favorite heading into the race, despite the presence of...
...defending champion Chris Mulvaney.
Mulvaney plays it up for the home crowd.
An aggressive start.
Mulvaney gets out well, while Jason Woolhouse of Oklahoma State gets squished.
Montana's McGowan and Indiana's Jefferson move to the front on the inside.
McGown took over the early lead.
Mulvaney ran right behind, on McGowan's shoulder.
Schmidt and Garner trail McGowan and Mulvaney.
As in many championship miles, no one wanted to make a move early on.
Eric Garner runs in the pack.
McGowan continues to lead, with Mulvaney running on the outside, ready to cover any moves.
The leaders went through the 800 in about 2:02.
BYU's Nate Robison ran in the pack, waiting for the pace to pick up.
Michigan State's Steve Sherer runs near the back of the pack.
Sherer was also planning to run the 3,000m final later in the evening.
McGowan continues to set the pace.
Chris Mulvaney runs in second place.
Erik Schmidt, who would finish fifth in 4:02.23, runs in the pack.
Sherer.
With three laps (600m) to go, Indiana's Sean Jefferson...
...charged into the lead and made a big move. He was clearly trying to make...
...a winning break, whether or not he could pull it off was yet to be seen.
Jefferson was the only sophomore in a field of juniors and mostly seniors.
Mulvaney and McGowan look ready to go after Jefferson.
With 400 meters to go, Jefferson pulled away, the question was if he could hold on to his lead.
