Sean Jefferson of Indiana leads the mile final with about 400 meters to go.
Jordan Desilets would finish seventh in 4:04.56.
Kentucky's David Freeman had an off day, finishing 10th in 4:18.10.
Jefferson ran his penultimate lap in 28 seconds and extended his lead...
...over the field. It looked as if his bold move would pay off.
Steve Sherer wound up sixth in 4:02.47.
Jason Woolhouse (left, 3rd, 4:02.00) runs alongside Chris Mulvaney (9th, 4:06.83).
Jefferson ran his last lap in about 30 seconds, and had enough of a lead that he started...
...celebrating before he crossed the finish line. He just missed running sub-4:00, stopping the clock...
...in 4:00.16 and winning his first national title.
Nate Robison (right, 2nd, 4:01.99) barely edged out Woolhouse. McGowan finished fourth in 4:02.07.
Jefferson was a 4:07 (1,600) and 1:52 (800) runner in college and has developed nicely at Indiana.
Erik Schmidt finished fifth in 4:02.23.

L-R: Moise Joseph, Inge, Etoot, Milkevics, and Kirk. One of the most painful moments of the meet involved...
...watching Sherridan Kirk exit the track after he twitched on the starting line and was charged with a false start.
