Trent Riter runs in the first 800m prelim. The top two runners in each heat plus the runners with...
...the next three fastest times would advance. Above: Kent State's Mike Inge leads Jesse O'Connell on the first lap.
O'Connell (1st, 1:46.78), Andrew Ellerton of Michigan (2nd, 1:47.10), and Moise Joseph (3rd, 1:48.03) advanced from the first prelim.
Jonathan Johnson led the second prelim, with Alabama's Peter Etoot and Nebraska's Dmitrijs Milkevics following.
Johnson (1st, 1:46.76), Prince Mumba of Oral Roberts (2nd, 1:47.01), Milkevics (3rd, 1:47.04), and Marc Sylvester...
...of Tennessee (4th, 1:47.84) advanced from the second prelim. Above: Johnson was the fastest qualifier of the day.
R-L: Paul Cross, Sherridan Kirk, Jason Briggs, James Hatch, Jean Balan, and Lukas Musil on the first lap of the third 800m prelim.
Cross (left) won in 1:47.99, James Hatch (2nd, 1:48.16) also advanced. There were no time qualifiers in the third prelim.
Notre Dame's Kurt Benninger and Radford's Goran Nava led on the first lap of the first 1,500m prelim. The top four runners in each of the two...
...prelims, plus the runners with the next four fastest times would advance to Saturday's final.
Nava takes over the lead, and Montana's Scott McGowan joins him up front.
R-L: Brendon Mahoney, Rob Myers, and Grant Robison, some of the favorites, hang back. Robison dropped out on the final lap.
Myers (1st, 3:46.58), McGowan (2nd, 3:46.71), Stanford's Don Sage (3rd, 3:46.84), Mahoney, Adam Davis, Bryan Lindsay, and Tom Lancashire...
...all advanced from the first prelim. Surprisingly, Indiana's Sean Jefferson (12th, 3:57.48), the 2004 NCAA Indoor mile champion, did not advance.
R-L: Sean Duffy, Chris Lukezic, Nate Robison, and Kevin Somok run up front on the first lap of the second 1,500m prelim.
Kentucky's Hunter Spencer takes over the lead, with Lukezic, Arkansas' Said Ahmed, and Robison still there.
Robison (no relation to Grant) takes over the lead with one lap to go.
Arkansas' Chris Mulvaney (3:46.39) and Said Ahmed (3:46.64) went 1-2, followed by Robison (3rd, 3:46.81) Wisconsin's Josh Spiker (4th, 3:46.82) and Tom Parlapiano (5th, 3:47.06)...
...who rounded out the qualifiers. Arkansas was in the race for the team title, and having two runners in the final would help them tremendously.
In the first of two steeplechase prelims, NAU's Henrik Ahnstrom leads going over the water barrier for the first time. Because the barrier was on the outside of the track, the race was just over seven laps.
