Ohio State's Aaron Fisher (1st, 8:46.99) and NC State's Andy Smith (2nd, 8:47.77) take over the lead.
Fisher pulls away, followed by Smith and Jochen Dieckfoss (3rd, 8:49.04). Not pictured, Brian Olinger, Steve Zieminski, and Daniel Parker also advanced.
Oregon's Brett Holts (6th, 8:53.38) advanced on time.
Texas' Mark Floreani (7th, 8:59.04) advanced on time. Three of the four time qualifiers came out of the first heat.
In heat two, R-L: Arizona State's Aaron Aguayo (8th, 9:04.18), Cal Poly's Luke Llamas (9th, 9:06.11) and Kent State's Peter Weisz (13th, 9:32.46) led early.
None of the three early leaders advanced to the final.
Stanford's Ian Dobson took over and won the second prelim in 8:56.61.
Jordan Desilets (left, 4th, 8:59.72) qualified for the final.
Not pictured, Soeren Lindner (3rd, 8:58.75), Mate Nemeth (5th, 9:00.75), and Matt Adams (6th, 9:01.17) also advanced.
Weber State senior Kenneth Richardson had the lead going over the final water barrier, but stumbled and fell. Fortunately, he was able...
...to get up and finish second in 8:58.34 to advance.
As was the case during the entire meet, the weather was extremely humid for the 10,000m final, so meet officials brought a mist-spraying machine out onto the track.
Matt Gonzalez of New Mexico takes the lead. The first 5,000m passed quite slowly, with the leaders going through in about 15:11.
Arkansas' Jason Sandfort (12th, 30:28.80) moves into the lead.
Stanford's Brett Gotcher (23rd, 31:41.32) runs in the pack.
With about 13 laps to go, Alistair Cragg took over the lead and picked up the pace. Only Robert Cheseret was able to hang with him.
Matt Gonzalez (running in third) also tried, and Simon Bairu followed.
NC State's Chad Pearson, NAU's Travis Laird, and St. Francis' Ryan sheehan run 5-6-7.
Pearson had a great race, winding up fifth (and less than a second behind third place) in 29:58.13.
Sheehan also had a great race, finishing sixth in 30:08.68 and earning All-American honors.
