Mike Inge, who was in the midst of a great year, led on the first lap, with Jesse O'Connell in second place.
Ellerton leads Daniel Pessing on the first lap.
Riter was having a breakthrough year, but he just missed advancing here, finishing fourth in 1:48.20.
UCSB's Ben Armel finished ninth in 1:52.88 and did not advance to the final.
Jesse O'Connell won the first heat in 1:46.78 and advanced automatically.
Andrew Ellerton finished second (1:47.10) and advanced automatically. Moise Joseph (3rd, 1:48.03) advanced on time.
With a strong first round, O'Connell set himself up as one of the favorites for Saturday's final.
Wisconsin junior Dan Murray finished seventh in 1:49.92 and did not advance.
Tennessee junior Marc Sylvester gets ready for the second 800m prelim.
