Kansas State junior Erik Sproll gets ready for the second of three 800m prelims.
UConn junior Joe Legare at the start.
Oral Roberts' Prince Mumba, a native of Zambia who would go on to represent his country at the 2004 Olympic Games.
University of Southern California junior Anthony Heckman at the start of the second 800m prelim.
Texas Tech star Jonathan Johnson jumped out to a lead on the first lap.
Behind Johnson, R-L: Peter Etoot, Dmitrijs Milkevics, Marc Sylvester, and Legare.
The runner-up a year ago, Johnson was considered the favorite here. His strong running in the prelim did nothing...
...to indicate otherwise. R-L: Courtney Jaworski, Sylvester, Legare, Heckman, and Sproll.
Sproll (right, 9th, 1:52.38) and Heckman (7th, 1:49.22) did not advance to the final.
This ended up being the fastest heat of the day and the top four runners advance. Johnson won in 1:46.76.
Mumba (2nd, 1:47.01) also advanced automatically...
...and Milkevics (3rd, 1:47.04) and Sylvester (4th, 1:47.84) had to sweat it out...
...a little bit before learning that they had also advanced to Saturday's final.
Mumba was one of three freshmen who advanced to the final.
Alabama's Peter Etoot (5th, 1:48.14) was the fastest non-qualifier of the day.
Johnson, who also runs the 400m, looked very strong in winning his prelim.
UConn's Joel Legare finished sixth in 1:48.32 and did not advance to the final.
UCLA senior Nick Thornton gets ready for the third and final 800m prelim.
Indiana State senior Jason Briggs.
