With just under a lap to go in the second 1,500m prelim, Nate Robison of BYU led and the rest of the field remained close behind.
Chris Mulvaney and Ben Aragon run in the pack. Robison hit the 1,200 mark in 3:05.
R-L: Hunter Spencer, Chris Mulvaney, Simon Ngata, Ben Aragon, and Josh Spiker.
Josh Spiker ran a big last lap to move from the back of the pack all the way up to fourth.
Mulvaney (3:46.39), Ahmed (3:46.64), Robison (3:46.81) and Spiker (3:46.82) all advanced automatically.
The only time qualifier from the second heat was Villanova's Tom Parlapiano.
After a dismal performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Chris Mulvaney...
...showed that he was back by winning his prelim. Mulvaney and Ahmed were clearly pleased with their 1-2 finish.
Parlapiano finished fifth in 3:47.06 and advanced to the final.
UCLA's Jon Rankin (6th, 3:47.75) missed advancing by less than half of a second.
Hunter Spencer finished 11th in 3:49.27.
NAU's Henrik Ahnstrom leads on the first lap of the first steeplechase prelim.
Florida sophomore Daniel Parker leads Texas junior Mark Floreani.
Ohio State's Aaron Fisher and NC State's Andy Smith take control of the race.
The top five in each of the two heats, plus the runners with the next four fastest times, would advance to Saturday's final.
Yale junior Lucas Meyer.
Fisher, a junior, continues to lead.
Boston University senior Jochen Dieckfoss.
Because the water pit at Texas is on the outside of the track, the runners go over it on each lap.
Florida junior Steve Zieminski.
