Texas Tech junior Jonathan Johnson leads the way with less than a lap to go...
...in the 800m final. Behind him (R-L) are Prince Mumba, James Hatch...
...and Nebraska's Dmitrijs Milkevics.
Johnson, who also runs on Texas Tech's 4x400 relay, had looked strong all season.
Johnson had finished second in this event, behind Sam Burley, one year ago.
R-L: Mumba, Hatch, Andrew Ellerton, Milkevics, Jesse O'Connell, Paul Cross, and Marc Sylvester.
Johnson continued to lead throughout the final lap and he managed to hold off a late charge from Georgetown's...
...Jesse O'Connell to win his first NCAA title in 1:46.39.
O'Connell, a senior, came from back in the pack to finish second in 1:46.79.
Tennessee freshman Paul Cross finished third in 1:47.18 and Marc Sylvester finished fourth in 1:47.23.
Johnson checks the scoreboard...
...and celebrates his win.
Johnson's competitors congratulate him as he catches his breath.
Michigan's Andrew Ellerton finished fifth in 1:47.29.
Wednesday's thunderstorms caused the 5,000m rounds to be cancelled...
...which meant that the event was run as a straight final. Twenty-seven...
...runners started the race, and on the second lap, the congestion...
...caused Arizona's Robert Cheseret (one of the race favorites) and Velibor Radojevic...
...to tumble to the track. Cheseret rejoined the pack quickly, but Radojevic...
...was never in contention again and eventually dropped out.
