Meb Keflezighi had already qualified for the Olympic team in the marathon...
...but was still undecided at this point as to whether or not he would...
...also attempt the 10,000 - a straight final, nine days before the marathon in Athens - as well.
He ultimately decided to pass up his 10,000 spot and focus solely on the marathon.
Abdi Abdirahman would lead the U.S. 10,000m contingent to Athens.
Abdirahman qualified for his second-straight U.S. Olympic team...
...in the 10,000. In Sydney, he finished 10th in the 10,000.
Ryan Shay miscounted his laps and kicked one lap early. He eventually realized his mistake...
...but he lost ground and finished 10th in 28:49.95. Dave Davis (left above) also seemed to think he was done when...
...he had one lap to go. Above: Meb Keflezighi wins his third USA 10,000m title and his second Trials 10,000 title.
Keflezighi's time of 27:36.49 was a USA Championship record. Craig Virgin set the old...
...record of 27:39.4 in 1979. It was also a U.S. Olympic Trials record. The previous record (27:45.61 from 1980)...
...also belonged to Virgin. Keflezighi dropped to the track and did a pushup just after he crossed...
...the finish line. He won the race by more than 18 seconds.
Abdi Abdirahman finished second in 27:55 and because he had already achieved the...
...Olympic "A" standard of 27:49, he would automatically...
...be included on the U.S. team.
Dan Browne finished third in 28:07.47 and opted to run the marathon and 10,000 in Athens.
Mike Donnelly finished fourth in 28:18.97, but because he didn't have the "A" standard...
...the next runner who did have the standard - Dathan Ritzenhein - would be on the team unless Donnelly could run the time by August 9th.
