On the first lap of the first of three 1,500m quarterfinals...
...Michael Stember (right) leads Charlie Gruber (center) and Paul McMullen (left).
Stember, who attended nearby Jesuit High School, was one of the...
...crowd favorites. He represented the U.S. in this event at the 2000 Olympics.
R-L: Karl Savage, Brandon Strong, Seneca Lassiter, and Joel Atwater.
Mike Miller leads Ian Connor.
Charlie Gruber moves to the front, Karl Savage runs second and Paul McMullen third.
Only five athletes would be eliminated in the first round of the 1,500. The top six in each heat,...
...plus the runners with the next six fastest times, would advance to the semifinals.
R-L: Brandon Strong, Sean O'Brien, Michael Stember, and Mike Miller.
O'Brien and Stember both train with the Nike Farm Team.

Charlie Gruber continues to set the pace and Paul McMullen, now running for the U.S. Coast Guard...
...runs in second place. McMullen was a 1996 Olympian in this event.
With one lap to go, Gruber and McMullen run 1-2 (with Seneca Lassiter in third).
Karl Savage and Michael Stember run 4-5.
Sean O'Brien finished seventh in 3:42.90 and advanced to the semifinals.
Brandon Strong finished 10th in 3:52.34 and was the only runner in the first heat who didn't advance.
Michael Stember looked like he was trying to send a bit of a message down the homestretch. He won the first quarterfinal in 3:41.65.
