Joel Atwater finished 12th in 3:55.15.
The runners went five lanes wide down the homestretch as they tried to finish in the top six.
The top 10 runners were separated by less than a second at the finish line.
BYU's Nate Robison kicked to a win in 3:43.84.
Charlie Gruber (3:43.87), Jason Lunn (3:43.89)...
...Chris Lukezic (3:44.14), Don Sage (3:44.23)...
...and Said Ahmed (3:44.34) advanced to the final.
Said Ahmed (behind Jason Lunn) dove across the finish line...
...but it was worth it, because he edged Ian Connor out for the final spot by .01 of a second.
Erik Nedeau made a strong showing here (8th, 3:44.41) but missed the final by .07 of a second.
Michael Stember gets ready for the second 1,500m semifinal.
Grant Robison had had a rough season due to an injury, but he was one of two athletes who had the "A" standard.
Bryan Berryhill had battled injuries and illness in 2004 but was hoping for a good one here.

After running a PR of 3:32.73 earlier in the season, Alan Webb was considered the favorite here.
Michael Stember looked good in the first round here but had raced inconsistently this season.
