Scott McGowan gets ready for the 1,500m final at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Kansas graduate and current assistant coach, Charlie Gruber.
Race favorite Alan Webb.
Georgetown standout Chris Lukezic.
After running 3:32.73 earlier in the summer, Webb had a lot of pressure on him here.
The Nike Farm Team's Drew Griffin.
Griffin was joined in the final by teammate Chris Estwanik (left).
Alan Webb jumped out to the lead on the first lap.
Webb was followed by (R-L) Said Ahmed, Charlie Gruber, Zach Griffin, and Michael Stember.
Jason Lunn (in background) runs in about fourth place and Nate Robison (in yellow) also runs near the front.
You can't tell by looking at these photos, of course, but the temperature...
...at race time was nearly unbearable. This was the hottest day of the meet and the men's...
...1,500 meter final was run at 4:30 p.m. Just standing outside was nearly unbearable.
Georgetown's Chris Lukezic hangs back early on.
Webb (at 700m) went through 800 meters in 1:57.25 after hitting the 400 in 59.13.
The race looked like it might just be a sit and kick affair...
...until Webb put in a huge move on the backstretch, just past 800 meters in.
R-L: Charlie Gruber, Said Ahmed, Jason Lunn, and Michael Stember trail Webb.
Stember and Lunn had both displayed better finishing speed than Webb in the past.
Rob Myers (leading Scott McGowan) was also known as a great kicker when he was "on."
