Many top runners were missing from this race, with some of them opting to...
...run the 3,000m, and some of them sitting out the meet...
...entirely. It allowed several runners who had never qualified for a national championship race before to compete here.
Charlie Gruber (leading) was one of the bigger names in the race. He had just won the USA 4k XC title three weeks earlier.
R-L: Anthony Gallo, Jason Long, and Bruce Hyde run in the back of the pack early on.
Gruber, a former Kansas University standout, is now a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater.
