Kevin Tschirhart of pushes the pace during the boys' junior mile.
In the second row (L-R) Laef Barnes, Daniel LaCava, and Ken Cormier give chase.
L-R: Barnes, LaCava, and Ross Toole with one lap to go.
Brian Trembley finished 10th in 4:25.57.
Almost everyone in the field was still in contention with one lap to go, but Laef Barnes...
...used a great last lap to pull ahead and win in 4:13.61, ahead of...
...Scotland's Ross Toole (4:14.56). Barnes ran a 4:09.61...
...indoor mile almost exactly one year earlier, so his victory over a competitive field shouldn't take many by surprise.
Barnes missed much of the '04 outdoor season due to a stress fracture, but he showed that he was back in winning here.
Scotland's Toole (left) took second and his compatriot, Mark Mitchell, finished 11th in 4:25.95.
Chris Barnicle (who would win the Millrose HS mile one week later) congratulates Barnes during his victory lap.
Tony Reavis interviews Barnes after the race.
L-R: Fumikazu Kobayashi, Mark Fountain, Mike Woods, James Hatch, Fidel Baregensabe, and Scott McGowan line up for the men's mile.
Rob Myers, a recent Ohio State graduate, won the 2004 USA Indoor mile title on this track.
Nate Brannen had stated ahead of time that he was going to go after Tony Waldrop's indoor collegiate mile record of 3:55.0.
L-R: Elkanah Angwenyi, Hatch, and Baregensabe at the start.
L-R: Race favorite Bernard Lagat, Brannen, Angwenyi, Baregensabe, and Sebastien Lounis.
Lounis, a sophmore at Michigan, had run an 800m PR of 1:51.39 earlier in the day across town at the Boston University Invitational.
After his 800m race, Michigan coach Ron Warhurst approached him about rabbiting this mile, because the original rabbit has cancelled earlier in the day.
Mike Woods, a freshman from Canada, was the third current Michigan runner in the race. The rest of the Michigan team sat in the stands and cheered their teammates on.
