Gilbert Okari was all alone as he approached the six-mile mark.
The 24-year-old Kenyan finished third in the 10,000m at the Kenyan trials one week earlier.
He would represent Kenya at the World Championships later in the month if he could achieve the "A" standard in time.
Okari dominated the race, winning in 27:28 and breaking Khalid Khannouchi's record of 27:49 set in 1999.
John Korir of Kenya finished second in 27:52. Despite rain the morning of the race, the skies cleared up...
...just about the time the gun went off and race conditions were great.
James Koskei (left, 3rd, 28:08) and Paul Koech.
Koech finished fourth in 28:11.
David Korir finished sixth in 29:03.
Scott Larson leads Andrew Masai and Habte Jifar.
Larson was the top American; he finished ninth in 29:26.
Masai, 43, was the first masters runner; he finished eighth in 29:25.
Habte Jifar of Ethiopia broke up the Kenyan dominance, sort of, finishing...
...seventh in 29:22.
Peter De La Cerda of the USA finished 10th in 29:34.
De La Cerda recently won the USA Mountain Running title.
Dennis Simonaitis leads Godfrey Kiprotich.
Simonaitis, 41, finished second in the masters race and 13th overall in 30:24.
Godfrey Kiprotich finished 11th in 30:19.
Terrence Mahon finished 12th in 30:21.

Note: Chip/net times were used to determine awards, so those are the times we are reporting.
