Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot opened up a lead just past Heartbreak Hill and won in 2:10:11.
2002 Amsterdam Marathon champion Benjamin Kimutai finished second in 2:10:34.
Martin Lel finished third in 2:11:11. The Kenyan dominance here wasn't a surprise, their finishing order was a little unexpected, though.
Timothy Cherigat finished fourth in 2:11:28.
Christopher Cheboiboch finished fifth in 2:12:45.
Cheboiboch finished second to Rodgers Rop in both the 2002 Boston and New York City Marathons.
Though Cheboiboch defeated Rop here, he had to settle for a lower place.
Fedor Ryzhov, age 43, was the first non-Kenyan and first masters runner.
Ryzhov finished sixth overall in 2:15:29.
Defending champion Rodgers Rop had a rough day, finishing seventh in 2:16:14.
Though Boston felt cool in the shade (at approximately 58 degrees) it was 70 degrees in Hopkinton at the start of the race.
David Kiptum Busienei of Kenya finished eighth in 2:16:16.
Very few runners ran personal bests in the warm and sometimes windy conditions.
Elly Rono finished ninth in 2:17:00.
Eddy Hellebuyck, age 42, was the top American and 10th overall in 2:17:18.
Laban Kipkemboi finished 11th in 2:17:50.
Silvio Guerra of Ecuador and Boulder, CO finished 12th in 2:18:31.
Karl Rasmussen, a Boston University graduate from Norway, finished 13th in 2:18:55.
Rasmussen was only eight seconds behind the leader at the halfway mark, passing through in 1:05:19.
Salvatore Bettiol of Italy, age 41, finished 14th in 2:22:06.
