This time around, Kimani entered the homestretch in second place but finished fourth behind eventual winner Keith Kelly (trailing Kimani).

Kimani competes in the 5,000m at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. He took the lead from Matt Lane with about 1,100 meters to go...
...and held off Matt Lane to win in 13:42.32 to Lane's 13:43.36.
The next day, Kimani was back, trying for another win in the 3,000m.
Kimani hung just off the pace for much of the race...
...before pulling away to win his second title of the meet.
It was Kimani's second year in a row winning the 3,000/5,000 double.
Kimani tried the 5,000/1,500 double at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor T&F Championships in Eugene, OR.
Kimani stayed near the lead for all of the race...
...but eventually wound up third behind Stanford's Jon Riley and Cal's Bolota Asmerom.
Kimani finished third again the next day in the 1,500m final (3:38.74) behind Bryan Berryhill's win.
Kimani runs among the leaders at the 2001 NCAA XC Championships at Furman.
Kimani went with the blistering pace set by eventual winner Boaz Cheboiywo (left) but dropped out early in the race with achilles problems.
Despite leaving the meet on crutches, Kimani was happy to sign autographs after the race.
Kimani tried the DMR, 1,500, 3,000 triple at the 2002 NCAA Indoor meet. Above, he anchors Alabama to third in the DMR.
Kimani ran just off the lead in the mile final...
...before finishing second to Christian Goy, 4:00.06 to 4:00.33.
Kimani was back later in the day competing in the 3,000. He finished fourth in 8:02.59, helping Alabama to a second-place team finish.
At the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it had been more than a year since Kimani had won an NCAA title.
