Kimani was up against a tough field in the 5,000 at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
But with one lap to go, he was just behind leader Jorge Torres...
...and he used a strong kick to win (13:59.30) in hot and humid conditions in Baton Rouge, LA.

The win would be Kimani's sixth and final NCAA title.
Kimani shares a laugh with competitors Boaz Cheboiywo and Jorge Torres the day before the 2002 NCAA XC Championships.
Kimani runs in the pack early on in the race.
A pack of four - Torres, Alistair Cragg, Cheboiywo and Kimani - broke away early in the race.
Kimani had an excellent season up until this point, beating eventual runner-up Cragg every time they raced, but he was the first to drop off the pack this time.
Kimani hung on to finish 11th in 29:48.
