#93 Galen Rupp, #82 Ryan Deak and #98 Tom Wyatt get out quickly at the start.
Rupp moved straight to the front on the first downhill and controlled much of th race.
Ryan Gasper (left) and Justin Switzer of the Midwest start out a little slower.
Alan Webb (with Sarah Schwald and Kara Goucher) reviews the girls' results during the boys' race.
Just past the half mile, approximately .6 of a mile into the race, the 31-runner field is still just a mob.
32 runners qualified, but Connecticut's Gavin Coombs was unable to participate after coming down with the flu...
...shortly before the race. Coombs reportedly passed out twice on the airplane on his way to California.
...Coombs took his doctor's advice and opted not to start the race.
Visible up front are #96 Mark Matusak, #94 Stuart Eagon, #92 Mohamed Trafeh...
...#72 Erik Stanley, #93 Galen Rupp, #73 James Strang and #81 Matt Withrow.
In the first mile, Galen Rupp was clearly the one setting the pace.
A year ago, Rupp was in ninth place with about 300 meters to go in this race, but collapsed...
...and did not finish the race.
