Sammy Mutai of Kenya was the designated rabbit.
Laban Rotich runs in fourth place and the rest of the field follows closely.
Lagat was the only runner who went with Mutai.
Rotich moves into third place, ahead of the reigning Olympic 1,500m Champion, Noah Ngeny.
When Mutai dropped out at the half mile as planned, Lagat was on his own with a 20-meter lead.
One would think, based on the size of Lagat's lead, that he was flying, but his 800m split was 1:58.
Ngeny runs in second place.
Ibrahim Aden and Vyacheslav Shabunin follow.
One lap later, it's Ngeny, Rotich and Shabunin.
Ngeny again.
Ibrahim Aden wound up sixth in 4:08.73.
Lagat continues to lead on lap nine.
Shabunin and Rotich move up into second and third place.
Shabunin finished second (4:01.99) and Rotich third (4:02.91).
Lagat's lead shrunk significantly at the end, but he still won in 4:00.36.
It was the first time in seven years that the Wanamaker Mile winner didn't break the 4:00 barrier.
