U.S. National Champion and Olympian Gabe Jennings focuses before the mile.
Christian Goy of Illinois State.
L-R: Goy, Ryan Travis of Arkansas, Jennings, and Colorado State's Bryan Berryhill.
Texas Christian's Eliud Njubi finished 8th in 4:00.53.
Berryhill's gutsy race strategy became immediately apparent - go to the front and run away from the field.
Berryhill had the added advantage (over Gruber and Jennings) of not having run the DMR (in addition to the mile prelims.) the night before.
Jennings, the previous night's hero who carried Stanford to a win in the DMR, ran a good race but not a great one as he finished 3rd in 3:58.54.
Charlie Gruber, midway back in the pack.
Goy and Gruber run shoulder-to-shoulder.
Berryhill was just the class of the field, leading from start to finish and winning in an impressive 3:56.84.
Gruber came up for a strong second-place finish in 3:58.51.
Rice's Adam Davis and SMU's Roman Oravec do a little gentle shoving as the gun goes off in the men's 800 final.
Otukile Lekote used the same strategy as he did in the prelims. -- going out fast.
Arizona's Patrick Nduwimana and Ryan Davis followed (also pictured is Arkansas' Dirk Heinze on the inside).
Moise Joseph, a Florida freshman (5th, 1:47.72).
With one lap to go, Lekote (3rd, 1:46.13) leads Nduwimana (1st, 1:45.33) and Heinze (2nd, 1:45.95). (Sorry, we didn't get any photos of the finish because a race official walked into our line of view.)
Jason Van Swol of Illinois finishes 8th in 1:54.89.
