1. Washington senior Dave Bazzi (8th, 29:53.26).
2. Notre Dame senior Ryan Shay made a bold move straight to the front of the 10,000m. Keith Kelly, Murray Link and Jon Riley were among those who followed him.
3. With competitors like NCAA XC Champion Keith Kelly (r) in the race, a wire-to-wire win for Shay seemed improbable, but apparently no one told Ryan Shay that. "The past years it's gone out real slow, and turned into a 5-K race. I'm a 10-K runner, and I decided to make it a 10-K race," said Shay.
4. Shay, Kelly, Oregon freshman Jason Hartmann and Bazzi.
5. Hartmann leads Christopher Mutai and Bazzi.
6. Ed Torres of Colorado finished 13th in 30:12.26.
7. When Shay moved away from the pack (curiously enough, he didn't pick up the pace, he just didn't slow down) Murray Link was the only one who was able to stay with him.
8. Jon Riley had a disappointing race, finishing 10th in 30:00.46.
9. Keith Kelly also had a disappointing race after getting sick a few weeks earlier.
10. Mutai leads Dartmouth sophomore Tom McArdle, Arizona State sophomore Fasil Bizuneh and Hartmann.
11. Shay managed to drop Link in the final mile and cruised to a 20 second victory in 29:05.44. "I was really surprised I wasn't challenged," he would later say.
12. Jason Hartmann's surprise 3rd place finish (29:28.97) thrilled the Oregon crowd.
