Kimata leads Jonathan Johnson, Chad Johnson and Marc Sylvester on the first lap.
Kimata leads Texas Tech freshman Johnson with a lap to go.
Kimata came in as one of the favorites with a 1:46.65 qualifying time.
Jonathon Johnson won in 1:46.55 and Sam Burley (1:46.88) grabbed the other automatic qualifying spot.
Marc Sylvester (3rd, 1:47.16) advanced on time.
Kimata was a surprising non qualifier (1:48.17), Chad Johnson (1:49.37) and Kevin Elliot (1:50.20) also did not advance.

After a slow first lap, it seemed likely that only two runners would advance from the third heat.
R-L: Smith, Arkansas' Robbie Stevens, Abai, O'Connell and SMU's Roman Oravec.
Jesse O'Connell and Roman Oravec run in the back of the pack.
Roman Oravec put in a strong last lap to win in 1:48.35, Moise Joseph was the other qualifier (1:48.48) out of heat three.
O'Connell (1:48.82) was one of the casualties of the first round, as were Abai (1:48.83), Stevens (1:49.05) and Smith (1:49.44).
Smith is a senior at Princeton.
