After a slow first kilometer, Boaz Cheboiywo (not pictured) moved into the lead, followed by Ryan Shay and Tom McArdle.
Cheboiywo of Eastern Michigan leads Shay of Notre Dame and McArdle of Dartmouth.
Vinny Mulvey, running in fourth, leads the main pack. He's followed by Oregon's Jason Hartmann and Purdue's Donnie Fellows.
Fellows, a senior, pulled off an upset to win the Big Ten 10,000 several weeks earlier.

Cheboiywo soon broke away into a solo lead.

Louis Luchini leads his Stanford teammate Adam Tenforde.
Shay and McArdle continue to run together.

Cheboiywo had discussed the possibility of going under 28 minutes here. The meet record is 28:01.30 by Suleiman Nyambui, set in 1979.
Shay and McArdle stretch their lead over the main pack and it becomes clear that they'll be racing for second and third.
Fellows, Torres and Mwangong lead the race for fourth.
Portland senior Joe Driscoll appeared to be having an off-day.
Cheboiywo spent much of the race looking around to see where his pursuers were.
Arizona State junior Fasil Bizuneh.
Cheboiywo passed through 5,000 meters in 14:07 as his coach encouraged him to slow down.
