R-L: Ben Bruce, Daniel Lincoln, Martin Allgeyer, Itay Magidi, Matt Adams and Lyle Weese.
Montana State junior Jonathan Gibson.
Past 1,200m, Bruce and Magidi lead Lincoln, Allgeyer and Weese.
Lincoln was the favorite here but the question was if he could defend his title after running Thursday night's 10,000m final.
Colorado State's Mike Nicks leads BYU's Adams and Memphis' Mate Nemeth.
UCLA sophomore Emik Emilsson.
Oregon's Brett Holts (11th, 8:54.07) leads Nicks (9th, 8:43.67). Nicks was the last qualifier in.
Florida's Steve Zieminski (6th, 8:40.74) advanced but BYU's Adams (10th, 8:44.42) missed by less than a second.
UCLA's Emilsson finished 12th in 8:56.59.
Lincoln (not pictured, 8:36.08) won, followed by Weese (left, 8:36.87), Kevin Barra (right, 8:38.51), Bruce (8:39.10) and Allgeyer (8:40.65).
Memphis' Mate Nemeth (8th, 8:43.34) and Clemson's Itay Magidi (7th, 8:41.67) also advanced.
The start of the first of two 5,000m semi-finals.
The top five in each heat and the runners with the next six fastest times would advance to Saturday's final.
R-L: Stanford's Seth Hejny, Kentucky's Thomas Morgan and Columbia's Steve Sundell.
Eastern Michigan's Boaz Cheboiywo, Oregon's Eric Logsdon and Baylor's Kyle King.
Colorado's Billy Nelson jumped right to the lead, doing exactly what coach Mark Wetmore told him not to do.
R-L on the outside: Neil Davis, Matt Spring, Tommy Bonn, Hejny, Sundell and Logsdon.
Cheboiywo looks relaxed at the back of the pack. He had a good reason to take it easy here...
...he was also running Thursday's 10,000m final and wanted to advance to the 5,000 final with as little effort as possible.
Stanford's Louis Luchini and Colorado's Billy Nelson lead.
