Meb Keflezighi was ahead of Tim Broe's course-record pace at 5k...
...but was about to encounter Cat Hill. Broe had three challengers last year at this point...
...this year it was just Keflezighi on his own.
Keflezighi remained in control the whole way, winning the national title in 22:28.
Keflezighi missed Tim Broe's course record by less than two seconds.
With 400 meters to go, Abdi Abdirahman and Chad Johnson battle for second place.
Abdirahman looks to see who else is around.
Abdirahman wound up third in 22:42.
Chad Johnson kicked to a surprise second-place finish (22:39) in what he later called the best race of his life.
Tim Broe showed that his comeback from injury is on track, finishing fourth in 22:47.
Dave Davis finished fifth in 22:49.
Mike Donnelly finished sixth in 22:51.
Dan Browne finished seventh in 22:54.
Brian Sell finished eighth in 22:58.
Nick Rogers finished ninth in 23:00.
Ryan Kirkpatrick rounded out the top ten (23:04).
Robert Gary (11th, 23:09).
L-R: Kevin Doyle (12th, 23:11), Terrence Mahon (16th, 23:15) and Matt Gabrielson (14th, 23:12).
USA Marathon Champion Ryan Shay finished 15th in 23:13.
Steve Slattery passed some runners in the final 400 meters to finish 13th in 23:11.
