Alan Webb wasn't announced by race organizers until
Thursday afternoon. |
Webb
would be facing New Balance Games mile champ and new
Welsh 1500 record holder James Thie, competing for
NYAC. |
The
mention of Webb's name brought the packed Armory to
its feet. |
Competitors
(from l): Clinton Bell, Jose Zayas, Jason Bernstien,
Eliud Njubi, and Thie |
The
smooth-running Webb, Thie, and Njubi followed pacesetter
Lorris Adams through 800 meters. |
When
Adams stepped off the track, Webb took over, leading
Thie and Njubi to the final lap. |
Heading
into the bell lap, Webb looked strong and seemed to
have a step on Thie. |
Fourth
place finisher Jason Long, 3:59.99. |
George
Milic of Yugoslavia, DNF. |
In
the final lap, Thie (3:57.71) and Njubi (3:58.72)
were able to get around Webb, who ran an indoor PR
of 3:59.49. |
