First leg of the DMR: St. Joe's Brian Rosetti, Wake's Nathan Sisco, G-town's Isidro Pimental, 'Nova's Ryan Haden and Kentucky's David Freeman. Freeman, Stanford's Don Sage, and Abilene Christian's John Kemboi. Kemboi, Sage, Sisco and Brown's Peter Hollatz lead up the pack. Stanford, the favorite, was in good position after Sage's leadoff but Jonathan Stevens pulled up suddenly with an achilles injury... ...Taking his team out of the race and himself out for the rest of the season, most likely.
It suddenly appeared that the new favorite would be Villanova with Mt. Sac 1,500m champ Adrian Blincoe as the anchor. Pat Anglin anchors Princeton's team. Alfred Rugema leads, followed by Blincoe, Chris Miltenberg, Chris Estwanik, Ian Connor and Ben Cooke. Despite strong competition from Rugema with a 3:58.8, Blincoe blasted a 3:58.4 to earn Villanova the victory. The last time that 'Nova won the DMR at Penn Relays (1981), now-coach Marcus O'Sullivan was a freshman on the winning team.
The high school boys' DMR, featuring Alan Webb. Some spectators were hoping that the first three legs of the South Lakes (VA) High School team would run slowly... ...so that anchor Alan Webb would be challenged for once. Unfortunately for them, he got the baton at the front of the race. Sub-four miler Webb looked like he was taking it easy on the first couple laps, staying in second place. Because Webb practically looked like he was jogging in the early going, we were surprised to hear that he had run a 4:04 split.
The race was no contest once Webb began his kick. The South Lakes team takes a victory lap. The high school boys' mile championship.
Justin Romaniuk of Suffern, NY (7th, 4:19.68). Bobby Lockhart of Handley H.S. in Virginia went out quickly... ...and held off the competition for a win in 4:11.45. The competition, led by Bobby Curtis (3rd, 4:14.51) of St. Xavier in KY. The high school boys' 3,000m Championship.

Charlie Millioen of St. Anthony's (NY) and Stephen Hass ran side by side much of the way, with Millioen taking the victory in a quick 8:21.04. Heat two (of three) in the college men's Distance Medley Relay. Dartmouth and Bucknell are pictured but Texas A&M won the heat.
