The Olympic Development Distance Medley Relay. Rich Kenah runs the leadoff leg for the D.C. Enclave. The Syracuse Chargers finished 3rd in 9:57.33.
St. Malachy's Old Boys of Ireland takes the lead. Three of the four members of the St. Malachy's team were in high school last year. The Syracuse Chargers and D.C. Enclave battle for the lead. The Shore Athletic Club finished 4th in 10:06.20.
Gareth Turnbull of St. Malachy's got the baton a few meters behind the leading Chargers... ...But Turnbull, well known for his european cross country success, came from behind to earn St. Malachy's the win in 9:48.34. The start of the Olympic Development steeplechase. L-R: Tim Hamill, Mike DeGennaro, Tom Chorny, Darin Shearer and Jose Miranda. Tim Broe, coming off an excellent winter, opened his outdoor track season here.
DeGennaro, Broe and Miranda go over the water jump in sync. Sean Mick of the Haddonfield Running Company finished 9th in 9:11.00. Chorney (4th, 8:42.47) leads but Broe would win the closely-contested race in 8:39.05. Better known as a miler, Erik Nedeau is trying his hand at the steeple this season. He finished 6th in 8:55.18. The start of the higly anticipated Olympic Development 5,000, featuring high schooler Dathan Ritzenhein.
Anthony Famiglietti (#50), Musa Gwanzura (#8) and Thomas Omwenga take the lead. Ritzenhein joins the leaders. His possible targets in this race included the national high school record (13:44) and the USATF National qualifying standard (13:51.50). When Alan Webb broke 4:00 indoors this winter, he had faster runners dragging him along. Unfortunately for Ritz, he was one of the ones doing the dragging here. Better known as a miler, Dan Wilson stepped up the distance here and finished 12th in 14:28.24. Brian Clas of the NYAC finished 9th in 14:22.03.
Terrance Armstrong finished 19th in 14:38.15. We have no doubt that Ritz could break Gerry Lindgren's 37-year-old high school record, this just wasn't the race in which to do it. His 13:51.69 (2nd) here put him an agonizing .19 away from the USATF qualifying standard. Carleton Jones (#24, 14:37.36) and Brad Hunt (14:40.32). In the end, Famiglietti won the race (13:47.64) but there was no question as to who was the class of the field. Ritz's time, by the way, would have won the previous evening's collegiate 5,000m by 5+ seconds. Omwenga finished 4th in 14:03.66.
Ricardo Santos of the NYAC finished 8th in 14:18.45.
The Olympic Development 10,000m. Mike Mykytok finished 2nd in 30:07.95. Gabriel Muchiri won the race by more than a minute in 29:01.51. Bryan Dunn of Fila Discovery USA was 3rd in 30:32.25.
