 |
| The
start of the college men's 4xMile Championship. (We're still
trying to figure out why the men ran a 4xMile and the women
a 4x1500m.) |
The
leaders include Michigan's Brian Turner, JMU's Ben Cooke, Stanford's
Seth Hejny and Navy's Aaron Lanzel. |
After
their disappointing DNF in the previous day's DMR, Stanford
was on a mission. |
On
the second leg, Don Sage of Stanford leads, followed by Abilene
Christian's Jean-Marie Ndikumana and Adrian Blincoe. |
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| 'Nova's
Dean Smith leads on the third leg, followed by Jon Riley of
Stanford. |
National
5,000m junior record holder Franklyn
Sanchez made a cameo appearence here for Georgetown. Duke's
Sean Kelly follows. |
Riley
and Smith, having exchanged positions. |
Anchoring
for Stanford was 2000 Olympian Michael Stember, meaning that
the other teams didn't have much of a chance. Stanford won in
16:15.70, five seconds ahead of Villanova. |
Penn
State's Gregg Davis, Texas A&M's Juan De Bastos, William
& Mary's Matt Lane, Georgetown's Dylan Walsh and Providence's
Keith Kelly. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| Matt
Lane currently leads this season's collegiate 10,000m list with
his 28:28.97. |
Ryan
Hayden sealed up 2nd place for Villanova. |
Jorge
Torres, coming back from injury, anchored Colorado's 4th place
team. |
Kelly,
the reigning NCAA Cross Country Champion, coming off his 28:32.55
runner-up finish in the previous week's Mt. Sac 10k. |
Bernard
Williams of the winning USA Blue 4x100 team hands off to Curtis
Johnson. We just like that you can see Maryland Elite's baton
flying through the air. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| The
high school boys' 4x800m where once again, Alan Webb was the
main attraction. |
And
once again, the South Lakes team ran well, handing Webb the
baton in the lead. |
Webb
had company on his first lap, but once he began his kick, the
race was over. |
Webb's
1:49.1 split was the fastest ever by a high school boy at the
Penn Relays. |
Last
year, South Lakes lost both the DMR and 4x800 to St. Malachy's
of Ireland... |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| But
this year, they won both. |
The
start of the men's olympic development mile. |
Villanova
frosh Jason Jabaut (5th 4:02.73), Clay Schwabe and Raymond Weeden. |
Leonard
Mucheru lead, Solomon Kandie of Tulane follows, Darin Shearer
trails. |
Hector
Torres of the Maryland Elite TC finished 10th in 4:07.01. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| Eliud
Njubi of Texas Christian takes over the lead and is followed
by Kandie, Schwabe and Shearer. |
Schwabe
had a great race here but just missed dipping under 4:00 for
the first time with his 4:00.02 for 3rd. |
Shearer
(who also competed in the steeple here) and Weeden lead a second
pack. |
L-R:
Jabaut, Sam Gabremariam, Sean O'Brien and Brendan Rodgers. |
Shearer
(11th, 4:10.36), Weeden (12th, 4:14.19) and Kandie (9th, 4:05.52). |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| Matt
Holthaus of the NYAC finished 4th in 4:02.67. |
Njubi
was able to hold off Leonard Mucheru 3:56.84 to 3:58.88 for
the win. |
The
start of the collegiate 4x800m. |
Seth
Hejny (above) and Michael Stember doubled back from the 4xMile
here. |
Kentucky's
3rd leg, Chad Johnson, has a slight lead over the field. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
| Stanford's
Mark Hassell and Auburn's Kell Heegard head up the chase pack. |
And
on the anchor, it was Stember for Stanford and Courtney Chambers
for Florida. |
St.
Joe's Geoff Valentine and Tennessee's Jebreh Harris follow. |
Stember
pulled out the second win of the day for Stanford as they held
off Kentucky 7:19.39 to 7:17.87. |
