Lap one of the highly-anticipated 1,500m final, the only distance final on the first day of competition.
L-R: Dan Wilson, Jason Lunn, Jason Long, Ryan Bak, Michael Stember, Bryan Berryhill, Alan Webb, Charlie Gruber and Ian Connor.
Gruber (at right) was barely recognizable without his trademark long curly hair.
Just past the 300 mark it's still a tightly-bunched pack. The unofficial split was 61 seconds.
Approaching 500 meters, Gruber leads, followed by Long, Stember and Lunn.
The field trails Gruber.
At 700 meters, Gruber continues to lead and it looks like it will become a kicker's race.
Stember, Lunn and Long continue to trail Gruber.

Gruber continues to lead approaching 900 meters.
With just over two laps to go, it's still Gruber in the lead.
Alan Webb mentioned in a post-race interview that he got boxed in, this may be what he was talking about.
With two laps to go, Berryhill, Webb, Long, Bak and Connor try to move into contention.
Webb (a college sophomore) and Bak (a college senior) were the two youngest competitors in the field.
With a little more than one lap to go, Michael Stember leads with his teammate Jason Lunn close behind.
Lunn, the defending champion, was the top seed in the race with a 3:55 mile coming in.
