Anderson gradually worked his way up until he was right behind Welsh with one lap to go.
Harry Norton anchors Lynx Elite's team made up of all high schoolers. They finished seventh in 10:13.36.
Anderson ran a great anchor leg to help the NYAC to a 9:50.90 to 9:53.82 victory over Georgetown.
Much of the excitement of this race was lost on the spectators who were cheering on Stacy Dragila in the pole vault during the race.
The masters 3,000m was another exhibition event that produced a great deal of excitement.
Doug Martyn leads Paul Hammond.
Brian Pope runs in second place. Part of the race was rabbited by David Hinga.
Tony Young and Pope run 1-3.
Young had run 8:22.99 in February but it wouldn't count as a record because it was on Washington's oversized track.
Mike Platt of the Syracuse Chargers finished 11th in 8:59.35.
John Hinton of Fleet Feet finished third in 8:36.79.
Tom Doody of Greater Lowell finished sixth in 8:47.47.
Pope looked like he might run away from Young in the final laps, but Young regained his lead to win in a new American masters record of 8:22.51.
The great duel had the crowd on its feet. Pope finished second in 8:23.70.
Oregon graduate Ross Krempley was a new face in the 800 final.
Andrew Neugebauer at the start of the 800 final.
