Lubert Lewis (1:48.05), Jonathon Johnson (1:48.20), Marc Sylvester (1:48.24) and Floyd Thompson (1:48.34) advanced automatically...
...while Kevin Elliott (1:48.53), Jean Balan (6th, 1:48.74) and Toby Henkels (7th, 1:48.97) advanced on time.
David Freeman was the odd man out, the only one from the second heat not to advance. He finished eighth in 1:50.42.

Derrick Peterson was second at the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships and won the 2002 indoor title, but has yet to win an outdoor USA title.

Two-time defending champion David Krummenacker was a question mark here, earlier in the week...
...he had suffered a hamstring injury and thought he'd have to pull out of the meet. Instead, he decided to warm up and see how it felt here.
Lap one, R-L: Krummenacker, Khadevis Robinson, Neugebauer, Jesse Strutzel, and Derrick Peterson.
Also in there, on the inside, are Kentucky's Caleb Bailey, the Farm Team's Jeff DeLong and Georgetown's Jesse O'Connell
Robinson won (1:49.32) with Krummenacker looking fine in second (1:49.73)...
...and Strutzel (1:49.80) and Peterson (1:49.88) grabbing the final qualifying spots.
This heat was the slowest and only the top four advanced; DeLong (5th, 1:49.89) missed advancing by .01.
Jesse O'Connell finished sixth in 1:50.11 and did not advance.
Antoine Batiste finished ninth in 2:03.82.
