The first lap of the second steeplechase semi-final.	The top five would automatically advance to Saturday's final.	Ray Hughes (left) and Robert Gary lead on the first trip over the water barrier.	This race was run at about 8:30 p.m. and the evening weather in Palo Alto was nearly perfect for distance running.	Ray Hughes and Eastern Michigan's Jordan Desilets run behind Gary.

After a strong third-place performance at the NCAA meet, Ibrahim was a DNF here.	Boston College coach and former Michigan standout John Mortimer.	2001 USA steeplechase champion Tom Chorny was sporting a very different look here than the one he had in 2001.	Adam Batliner of the NYAC finished 10th in 8:56.82.	John Mortimer finished 11th (9:02.26).
