The first lap of the first of two junior 1,500m prelims.
R-L: Rolf Steier, Sean Drake, Chris Lukezic and Tyler Raymond.
Sesar Figueroa runs at the back of the pack.
L-R: Raymond, Lukezic, Jeremy Doherty, Drake, Cameron Schwehr and Steier.
The top three in each heat plus the runners with the next six fastest times would advance to the final.
Because the field wasn't very big, this meant that only four runners would be eliminated in the prelims.
This was the second year in a row that the junior nationals were held in conjunction with the senior nationals...
...It's a great concept and opportunity for the participants and fans but unfortunately many spectators went home when the senior events were over.
With one lap to go, Chris Lukezic of Georgetown moves to the lead and Florida high schooler Sam Vasquez (#939) moves up as well.
Lukezic won the first prelim. in 3:57.90 with Schwehr second (3:58.14), Vasquez third (3:58.32) and Raymond fourth (3:58.51).
Jeremy Doherty (3:59.15), Rolf Steier (3:59.35) and Sean Drake (4:00.32) also advanced.
Sesar Figueroa (8th, 4:03.16) was the only runner who didn't advance from the first prelim.
Brian Sullivan leads on the first lap of the second junior 1,500m prelim.
