R-L: Brian Sullivan, who finished 4th in the Golden West mile (4:12.77) less than a week earlier, leads.
R-L: Phillip Reid, Shane Stroup, Adam Perkins, Rob Kuhn, Gary Malinko, Ryan Ripley and Joaquin Chapa follow.
Ripley leads Chapa on the first lap.
With two laps to go, Sullivan continues to lead with Perkins and Chapa to his outside.
R-L: Sullivan, Perkins, Malinko, Chapa, Stroup (apparently stumbling) and Ripley.
With just over a lap to go, Perkins moves to the lead...
...with Stroup and Reid also up there.
CA high schooler Reid (left) would win the second prelim. in 3:58.64.
Perkins (second from right, 2nd, 3:58.86) and Stroup (left, 3rd, 3:59.19) grabbed the other two automatic qualifying spots.
Oregon high schooler Chapa finished fourth in 4:00.17 and advanced on time.
Georgia Tech's Rob Kuhn (not pictured) missed advancing by .13 of a second.
Duquesne's Gary Malinko (5th, 4:00.73) was the last time qualifier for the final.
Russell Brown of New Hampshire gets ready for the first junior 800m prelim.
Alta High School junior Dan Hutson won 5A state titles at 200m, 400m and 800m this year.
Georgetown freshman Courtney Jaworski.
The winner of each heat plus the runners with the next seven fastest times would advance to the final.
R-L: Jaworski, Christopher Woods, Dan Michael, Christopher Patrick and Russell Brown.
Patrick leads Michael, Brown and Kent State's Michael Inge.
Inge moved from last to first on the second lap, winning in 1:51.94. Jaworski finished second (1:52.40)...
...and Brown (3rd, 1:52.88) was the last runner to qualify out of the first prelim.
