Matt Holthaus took out the pace early on in heat one of the men's 1,500 rounds before fading to a non-qualifying 9th (3:52.54).
2000 Olympian Jason Pyrah takes the lead, followed by former World Indoor bronze medalist Erik Nedeau and Andy Downin. Only Downin advanced to the final.
Drew Griffin (#362), Jeremy Huffman (#434) and Nedeau run near the front with 200m to go.
High schooler Alan Webb, took heat one in 3:45.77 with a furious finishing kick.
Another high schooler, Ryan Hall of California, ran in heat two but had a tough day, running 3:53.03, 11 seconds slower than the performance that had qualified him for this meet.
Stanford-bound Hall (9th, 3:53.03) runs with his future teammate, Gabe Jennings, the winner of heat two in 3:4080.
Ibrahim Aden (4th, 3:41.36) leads Paul McMullen (2nd, 3:41.12) in heat two. Both advanced to the final
NCAA Champion Bryan Berryhill leads heat three (which he won in 3:40. 47) while Don Sage (9th, 3:52.61), Joel Atwater (8th, 3:47.31) and Seneca Lassiter (2nd, 3:41.20) follow.
Thanks to Berryhill's rapid frontrunning style, heat three had the 4 of the 6 time qualifiers with Berryhill, Lassiter, Michael Stember, Clay Schwabe, Nick McFalls and Christian Hesch all advancing.
The 10,000m final gets underway with 2000 Olympians Alan Culpepper and Abdi Abdirahman setting the pace.
Hanson's James Jurcevich (14th, 30:19) and Team USA Southern California's Matt Downin (6th, 29:17.45) run side by side.
Coming off the back stretch at Hayward field, Culpepper, Abdirahman, Downin, etc. follow leader Mebrahtom Keflezighi (not pictured).
In a race that featured many lead changes among Abdirahman, Culpepper and Keflezighi, Abdirahman takes the lead here and manages to keep it.
The NYAC's Chris Graff finished 8th in 29:32.61).
Abdirahman widens his lead.
Weldon Johnson (with Downin), running in a singlet plugging his web site -- www.letsrun.com -- had a great race here, moving up to snag fourth (29:01.40).
With a few laps to go, Abdirahman was clearly confident of his hances for victory, gesturing to some of his friends in the crowd.
Abdirahman said after the race that he figured it was his chance to win this title after Culpepper took it in 1999 and Keflezighi took it in 2000.
