Adam Goucher continues to lead with Matt Lane on his shoulder. Also pictured are #129 Brian Baker, hip #14 Jonathon Riley and #750 Nolan Swanson.
Lane, Kennedy and Culpepper remain tucked in behind Goucher.
Bob Kennedy makes a surge just after the 2k mark and opens a little distance on the field.
2000 Olympian Nick Rogers (5th, 13:35.68).
Jorge Torres (16th, 13:58.24) runs with his soon-to-be CU teammate Dathan Ritzenhein.
Lane and Goucher cover Kennedy's move.
Alan Culpepper, doubling back from the previous night's 10,000 impressed with his strong kick for 2nd (13:29.66).
High schooler Dathan Ritzenhein ran impressively. His 11th-place 13:44.70 was just .7 off of Gerry Lindgren's 1964 high school record.
All season Kennedy has been saying how well his workouts have been going despite some minor problems in races -- here he ran well when it counted, taking the title in 13:28.72.
Ritzenhein reacts to the news that his time was only .7 off the high school record.
Though Ritzenhein was initially disappointed, he rebounded quickly and was upbeat when talking to reporters after the race. "I'm not upset, I can't be upset about a race like that," he would say.
Kennedy was obviously thrilled with his win after a car accident prevented him from being a factor a year ago.
Friends and rivals Ritzenhein and Matt Tegenkamp (12th, 13:49.64) congratulate one another.
