As is his style, Bryan Berryhill takes the lead immediately in the 1,500m final.
Paul McMullen and Andy Downin (along with Gabe Jennings, Charlie Gruber, Seneca Lassiter and Ibrahim Aden) follow close behind.
The 2000 1,500m national champion Gabe Jennings (4th, 3:38.02), followed by Nick MacFalls (10th, 3:45.52).
Due largely to this young man's presence in the event, ESPN interrupted Sportscenter to televise this race live.
Jennings makes a strong move with 400m to go -- unfortunately it wasn't quite strong enough as he was caught with about 20 meters to go.
Lassiter, Michael Stember, Aden and Alan Webb try to chase him down.
Webb tried to rely on his strong finishing kick, but it wasn't quite enough as he finished a still-impressive 5th in 3:38.50, the 2nd fastest high school time ever (he also has the #1 time). Clay Schwabe, having an impressive year, finished 6th.
It looked like a 100m race as the runners raced up the finishing stretch. Coming out on top was Andy Downin (3:37.63), who factored into almost no one's pre-race predictions.
Downin celebrates with his conquerees -- McMullen, Schwabe, Webb and Lassiter -- in the background.
Lassiter was able to come up for second (3:37.66), qualifying him for the World Championships, provided that he can get the "A" standard of 3:36.20 in time.
The happy medallists: McMullen (whose wife Jill had a baby girl back in Michigan less than 24 hours before the final), Downin and Lassiter pose with USATF CEO Craig Masback.
