Start of the junior boys 8k -- one of the most highly anticipated races of the weekend
The pace was slow on the first two of four laps.
#294 Ben Hawkins, #201 David Axel and #295 Erik Heinonen trail the pack.
#217 Ryan Moorecroft, Dathan Ritzenhein (orange headband), #221 Ian Dobson and #359 Anderson Smith were among the leaders heading into the second 2k lap.
Pre-race speculation centered on whether or not anyone could beat Michigan high schooler and two-time Foot Locker XC Champ, Dathan Ritzenhein.
Approximately 3,500 meters into the race, Ian Dobson (Stanford) and #353 Nicholas Schuetze hold a slight lead over Matt Tegenkamp and Ritzenhein.
Oregon high schooler Erik Heinonen.
#391 CR Davis (34th, 27:00) and #95 Xavier deBoissezon (33rd, 26:55).

In the pre-race speculation as to who could challenge Ritzenhein, not many people mentioned Wisconsin freshman Matt Tegenkamp...
