Hezekiel Sepeng and Arthemon Hatungimana lead heat one of five in the first round of the 800m.
U.S. National runner-up Derrick Peterson had a rough day and failed to advance. Sepeng, Hatungimana and reigning Olympic Champion Nils Schumann qualify out of heat one. Daniel Caulfield of Ireland runs in heat two.
Kenya's Wilfred Bungei leads the pack. Bungei wins heat two, followed by Bram Som, Pawel Czapiewski, Daniel Caulfield, and Boris Kaveshnikov (left). Khadevis Robinson finished 5th in heat three with a 1:49.42. Andre Bucher won heat three in 1:45.49. Khalid Tighazouine (in 2nd) and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (in 3rd) also advanced.
Nathan Brannen, a recent Canadian high school graduate and soon-to-be freshman at Michigan, was very popular with the home crowd. L-R: David Krummenacker, William Yiampoy, Otukile Lekote, Antonio Manuel Reina, Brannen and Liam Byrne run in heat four. Krummenacker (1:48.15) and Yiampoy (1:48.02) were the only two runners to advance to the semis from their heat. Yiampoy followed by Krummenacker, with Reina (at far left) finishing 3rd, Joeri Jansen (far right) 4th, Brannen 5th and Lekote a surprise 6th.
 
Patrick Nduwimana, a medal contender from Burundi (and a NCAA champion for Arizona last winter). Nduwimana leads with Nicholas Wachira on his shoulder. Nduwimana wins the heat in 1:45.13 with Glody Dube 2nd, Algeria's Adem Hecini 3rd, Nicholas Wachira 4th, Marvin Watts 5th (all of the above advanced to the final), Tom Omey 6th and Prince Mumba 7th.
