Marius Bakken leads out heat one (of two) in the 5,000m, Mark Carroll follows.
Carroll was one of the surprising casualties of the first round, failing to advance by one spot with his 13:37.27. The pack chases Bakken and Carroll. Despite a heavy limp after crossing the finish line, Greene was able to complete a victory lap and ham it up for the cameras.
Read Bakken's account of the race on his web site. L-R: #684 Richard Limo, #15 Ali Saidi-Sief, and #678 Sammy Kipketer. The same three leaders with Mohamed Said El Wardi and Bakken right behind. Nick Rogers of the U.S. who earned a spot on the U.S. team after Matt Lane just missed the 'A' standard (and Bob Kennedy had to withdraw due to injury). Rogers had a rough race here finishing 16th in 14:33.39.
Saidi-Sief still leads the way with Million Wolde on his shoulder. R-L: Kipketer, Wolde and Limo. El Wardi barely snuck into the final, grabbing the final time qualifier with his 9th place 13:36.24. Abiyote Abate (5th, 13:28.88), Limo (3rd, 13:28.78) and Kipketer (6th, 13:28.90) all advanced to the final, as did Saidi-Sief (1st), Wolde (2nd), Driss El Himer (4th), Bakken (7th), Isaac Viciosa (8th) and El Wardi.
Heading out to the start of heat two, Hailu Mekonnen looks relaxed as he waves to some supporters. Mekonnen, Adam Goucher, and Canadian Jeremy Deere, a home crowd favorite. Goucher leads the pack on the first lap. Goucher followed by Deere and Kenya's John Kibowen.
R-L: Up front it's Mekonnen, Alberto Garcia, Kibowen, Yonas Kifle, Mohammed Amyn and Dennis Jensen. Amyn. L-R: Goucher (3rd, 13:32.92), Amyn (5th, 13:34.54), Kibowen (6th, 13:35.09), Garcia (4th, 13:33.64) and Mekonnen (1st, 13:32.11). All five advanced to the final. Goucher, looking strong.

With less than a lap to go, Goucher is right there. Ahmed Ibrahim Hashim finished a non-qualifying 7th (13:40.09). Goucher gives a wave as he heads up to the mixed zone.
