#1144 Tim Broe runs up front in the first of two steeplechase heats.
#682 Reuben Kosgei, #759 Brahim Boulami and #763 Ali Ezzine are among the leaders in heat one. Tim Broe and U.S. Champion Tom Chorny chase the pack. Broe advanced to the final as the fastest "loser" and Chorny did not advance, finishing 11th in 8:51.74. Reuben Kosgei won his heat and had the fastest time of the day with a 8:21.96.
Luis Miguel Martin finished 3rd in the heat (8:25.09), easily advancing to the final. Heat two gets underway. The pack runs in triangle formation. Worlds Record holder Bernard Barmasai finished 3rd in heat two (8:25.65), advancing to the final.
   
  Anthony Famiglietti of the U.S. clears a barrier. Famiglietti finished 11th in heat two (8:44.54) and did not advance to the final.
