Race favorite Hicham El Guerrouj gets ready to begin competition in the 1,500m heats.
Paul McMullen of the U.S. does some last minute stretching. El Guerrouj leads McMullen and Ireland's James Nolan. With less than 200m to go, #685 Laban Rotich (3rd, 3:38.37), #1186 McMullen (5th, 3:38.48) and Daniel Zegeye (4th, 3:38.48 also) are in position to advance to the semi-finals.
Graham Hood (left) snagged one of the time qualifiers with his 7th-place 3:38.99, while James Nolan finished 10th in 3:42.84. Benson Korimara of Kiribati got a big cheer from the crowd as he finished last in the first heat with a 4:51.36. Gabe Jennings, who earned his spot on the team when Andy Downin missed the 'A' qualifier, gets ready for his 1,500m heat. Gabe Jennings, who claims that he's only been training about 20 miles a week, finished 11th in 3:46.07. Canada's own Kevin Sullivan runs in the 3rd and final heat, finishing 6th (3:38.76) and advancing to the semis. L-R: Sullivan, William Chirchir (3rd, 3:38.69), Andrew Graffin (10th, 3:40.44), Seneca Lassiter (11th, 3:44.50) and Wolfram Muller (9th, 3:39.95).
 
With less than 200m to go, it's (R-L) Reyes Estevez (1st, 3:38.27), Chirchir, Youssef Baba (4th, 3:38.72), Muller, Rui Silva (5th, 3:38.74), Sullivan and Craig Mottram (7th, 3:39.10).
Seneca Lassiter looked strong until the final lap, when he faded to 11th. Kevin Sullivan had a big cheering section, complete with "Sully" t-shirts. They'll have more to cheer about on Friday as he runs in the semi-finals.
